They grow plants on lunar soil

Communications Biology magazine announced that the research group at the University of Florida in the United States managed to make a seed of Arabidopsis thaliana, which is a plant similar to watercress, grow in samples of lunar regolith.

The research team compared the growth process of the seed in the lunar soil with that of several samples of terrestrial volcanic ash that have similar characteristics.

As a result, a better growth of the plant originated in the terrestrial substrate, although the plant was also able to germinate in the lunar substrate.

The results demonstrate a historic milestone in space research. “These data demonstrate that terrestrial plants are capable of growing in lunar regolith,” the report’s authors said.
