The film “White Sun of the Desert” has long taken its place in the golden fund of Soviet cinema. Even in Hollywood, authoritative experts were familiar with this picture and appreciated it highly.
Director Vladimir Motyl did not hide the fact that filming the film was difficult for him. Problems began already at the moment the script was approved and accompanied the entire work on the film. The film crew encountered the main difficulties during a business trip to Dagestan. After that trip, Motyl even turned grey.
The team was promised the necessary equipment, but deliveries were delayed. In fact, the employees managed on their own. This affected the entire work: members of the film crew, faced with disrespect for the future film, refused to observe basic discipline. Often the actors arrived in a drunken state in the morning and disrupted their work day. None of them responded to the director’s comments.
Often feasts turned into fights. The police came to the set every now and then, interrogating the instigators. It even got to the point that Pavel Luspekayev, while separating the fighters, received a knife wound. The blade went straight across his face above his eyebrow.
And during the filming of the equestrian stunt, another misfortune happened: one of the stuntmen died. The investigation showed that a safety violation was to blame. Due to a production defect, the sequence with the stunt, during which a professional died, did not even make it into the final version of the film.
