The phone calls to the Bordeaux poison control center were of much the same content at the start of July. After the traditional “hello”, the doctors heard the interlocutors seized with vomiting.
“Then when explaining the reasons for the phone call, they were going to vomit again,” says Dr. Magali Labadie, head of the New Aquitaine poison control center.
30 cases of poisoning
With the high temperatures mixed with showers, the first porcini mushrooms made a dazzling and unexpected rise in early July.
But the researchers do not all have the ad hoc knowledge in the matter, 30 people consulted the center in the space of three days, victims of intoxication. And the same symptoms. “Always uncontrollable vomiting for 2 or 3 hours. We are then smeared and we have to wait 48 hours before we can eat again, ”continues the doctor.
Of the 30 poisoning cases, 20 had ingested Satan’s boletes, confusing them with red-footed boletes, which are edible. The remaining 10 cases involved various other types of mushrooms. “Some ended up in the hospital in a state of dehydration. Satan’s boletes, even regular pickers are fooled,” notes Dr. Magali Labadie who shares some advice for porcini mushroom lovers.
Take a picture of your picking
If in doubt, the first instinct is to go to a pharmacy to check your basket with a professional with extensive knowledge of mycology and toxicology. Second advice: do not hesitate to take a picture of the mushrooms you have picked to send them, in the event of symptoms, to the poison control centre.
“If an amanita phalloides is ingested, a specific treatment exists. When you know which mushroom was eaten, you know better what to expect. »
