Mortal Kombat 1, the next game in NetherRealm’s 30-year-old fighting game franchise, travels back in time centuries before the events of the known Mortal Kombat timeline. The opportunity for Jean-Claude Van Damme to make an appearance, thanks to a skin that will be sold separately.
Indeed, the Belgian actor will make an appearance as Johnny Cage. His appearance in Mortal Kombat 1 closes a specific loop in the franchise’s history. He was the direct inspiration for the character of Johnny Cage at the start of the series.
“He was supposed to be Johnny Cage“, said the Mortal Kombat series co-creator in an interview with Polygon last year. Developers at Midway pitched the idea to JCVD, but it never came to fruition, Ed Boon said.”For some reason, that just never materialized. Apparently, Jean-Claude Van Damme has changed his mind“.
“The fiction behind Mortal Kombat was kind of already in development before we even spoke with Jean-Claude Van Damme and when he ended up not being involved we just sort of moved forward“said series co-creator John Tobias in 2019.”The idea of his involvement was that he either play himself in the game or he was going to play a character in the game’s fiction. His character is ultimately what became of Johnny Cage“.
Johnny Cage was eventually played by martial artist Daniel Pesina in the first two Mortal Kombat games and by Linden Ashby in the 1995 film adaptation of Mortal Kombat. 2021. Jean-Claude Van Damme, for his part, played Colonel William F. Guile in the film adaptation of the Street Fighter video games.
Mortal Kombat 1 will be available on PS5, PC, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch next September.
