The pancreatic cancer is a serious disease that affects thousands of people around the world. According to’World Health Organization (OMS), nearly 458,918 new cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed worldwide in 2020, resulting in approximately 432,242 deaths. This cancer is notoriously difficult to detect at an early stage, which makes knowing the symptoms crucial to improving a patient’s chances of survival. A symptom recently identified as an early indicator of pancreatic cancer involves bowel movements.

When a tumor obstructs a pancreatic ductthis results in insufficient pancreatic juices in the intestines, causing poor absorption and diarrhea. The stools can then become bulky, greasy, pale and give off a foul odor. This symptom, although less known, can be a crucial early sign of the presence of pancreatic cancer.

Early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is essential to increase the chances of patient survival. Researchers estimate that early detection could prevent a significant percentage of deaths from this disease. By identifying a wider range of symptoms, including stool changes, scientists are helping doctors determine which patients should be referred for urgent testing.

It is important for patients to be aware of these less common symptoms, such as changes in stool, to improve the chances of early diagnosis and successful treatment. If the symptoms persist for more than two weeks, it is recommended to consult a general practitioner to obtain a professional opinion and possibly undergo additional examinations.
