The Guatemalan Army located a group of Belizean soldiers in national waters, the latter claiming that they were in Belizean territory. The incident did not escalate and was shared on social media.
In one of the recordings you can see how a Guatemalan boat intercepts the Belizean soldiers, who said they were only taking a tour with journalists. But they claimed that they were in Belizean territory.
The place of the meeting was on the Sarstún River, and the topic did not go beyond a peaceful exchange of arguments between the national military and the Belizeans.
“They were made to see that they were in Guatemalan waters without authorization, they were invited to leave Guatemalan waters and they were escorted to their starting point,” explained Colonel Rubén Téllez, spokesman for the Guatemalan Army.
The slamming door explained that these types of situations are usually normal, but that they always maintain surveillance in the area. “It is normal for there to be boats periodically trying to navigate the river or reach the islet. It always proceeds in the same way. “Meanwhile, reinforcements have been sent to the naval station, through a coast guard.”
Due to this fact, the Chief of the National Defense Staff supervised the operations and the situation last Saturday. If there is another type of communication regarding the incident, the spokesperson explained, it would be through the respective foreign ministries.
