This fall, let’s plant brambles for succulent desserts

A common name has been invented for this hybrid: “blackberry”. It was in Scotland, in 1979, that a passionate hybridizer, Derek L. Jennings, succeeded following five years of effort in pollinating the mulberry ‘Aurora’ with the pollen of a raspberry tree, this time obtaining a hybrid whose fruits have a raspberry rather than blackberry appearance. He named his crossing following the River Tay, Scotland’s longest river which flows into the North Sea following its source in the Highlands. Now available in different varieties such as ‘Buckingham Tayberry’, ‘Medana Tayberry’ or ‘Bounty Berry Tayberry’, the plant is very productive, the stems being covered with fruits mixing the flavors of both parents, in a delicious sweet-tart balance.
