Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Godfather has become a true masterpiece of world cinema. The gangster crime drama won numerous awards and broke box office records in most countries where it was shown. The film won three Oscars alone: for Best Picture, Actor and Adapted Screenplay.
But in the Soviet Union, bonuses were not indicators. The censors hated the foreign hit starring Marlon Brando. Officials felt that stories from the life of the Italian mafia too actively promoted the cult of violence. But for viewers in the USSR this was unacceptable.
Therefore, although the film was purchased for demonstration soon following its premiere, it was not allowed to the public. The Motion Picture Association of America even declared a boycott of the Soviet film market. However, The Godfather was shown only in November 1990, when all restrictions were lifted.
And the depiction of the realities of the mafia delighted inexperienced viewers. The film has been a great success so far.
