Many EU governments consider complete external border protection to be the most effective means of preventing irregular migration. Right now a discussion about the Bulgarian border with Turkey has flared up again. A local inspection by the author last summer along the Balkan route revealed that this is an expensive measure that does not fulfill its purpose, but has many highly dangerous side effects.
