This Liège mother asks for the reopening of the investigation into the mysterious death of her daughter: “She fell from the cliff”

A mother from Waremme asks for the reopening of the investigation into the death of her daughter. 7 years ago, Dina fell to her death from a cliff in Benidorm, Spain. Spanish justice had concluded an accident. Her mum is convinced that her Spanish boyfriend is involved. She returned to the scene of the tragedy with our colleague from VTM Faroek Ozgunes.

Dina, lived in Spain for several years. She ran a bar there, facing the sea. In 2015, her body was found on rocks, at the bottom of a cliff. Carine, her mother, learns the news on the phone. It is the police who announce the death to him. “What happened?”asks the mother to the agents. “She fell off the cliff, ma’am. She took a selfie”they replied. “I tell myself it’s not possible. She’s been living here for 5 years. What is she doing a selfie at 1:30 in the morning? It’s not possible. They told me said ‘yes, yes madam’. So I asked who she was with and they told me she was with her Spanish boyfriend”explains Carine.

Dina is in a relationship with a 39-year-old Spaniard. On the images of the surveillance cameras of a hotel, we see the couple arguing on the evening of the tragedy. Dina is found dead, at the foot of the cliff, a few minutes later. His companion is suspected, arrested, then released. He changes his version of the facts several times, and declares that Dina would have fallen while taking a selfie.

During the reconstitution the investigators ask him to tell his version again. “Can you tell us concretely if she jumped, if she slipped or if she fell?”ask the investigators. “She Slipped”he replies briefly.

The police finally concluded that there was an accident and closed the investigation. But Carine, Dina’s mother, doesn’t believe it. She is still fighting today to know the truth. Too many questions, still unanswered, seven years later… “There was no neighborhood survey, no toxicological analysis, no record of phone calls from the person who last saw the victim alive. There was no search. It’s a Benidorm investigation, an investigation of missed opportunities.”note Bert Vanmechelen, avocat de la maman de Dina.

Carine wants to relaunch the investigations. The decision to reopen the file, by the Belgian justice, will be taken next month.
