This was the rescue of Venezuelans who could not cross the Darién

A group of 10 migrants were rescued this weekend in the dangerous Darién jungle, after presenting serious health problems.

According to local authorities, the group was made up of six children and four adults; four Venezuelans, four Colombians and two citizens of Ghanawho had several days with fever, diarrhea and infections.

Realizing what was happening, inhabitants of the Anachucuna community in the Guna Yala region gave them first aid. In addition, they notified National Border Service (Senafront) so that they could be transferred to a competent health center.

The emergency teams transported the migrants by sea to a health center in the community of the Puerto Obaldía Battalion; at the scene, the walkers were hospitalized and will remain under evaluation until their recovery.

The Venezuelan migration crisis forces thousands of Venezuelans to cross the Darién jungle every day. Desperate migrants seek a better future away from Venezuela. For them, the walkers try to enter Panama to follow the Central American route that will take them to the United States, where they will request refuge.

VENEZUELANS IN THE DARIEN

According to official figures, in 2022 more than 68,000 people have crossed the jungle. However, at least 18 have lost their lives and hundreds of people are missing.

A study recently published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) pointed out that 81% of those who cross the jungle have suffered an injury or illness in the midst of the hostile journey.

A migrant seeking a better future through the Darien jungle has to risk his life through mighty rivers experiencing flash floods. On the other hand, they face wild and poisonous animals, swampy terrain, steep mountains, cliffs in various areas of the route and constant rain.
