Thomas Mann and the Sea – Literature

All his life the sea was a promising place of longing for Thomas Mann. Shortly before his death, he spent one last stay at the beach in Noordwijk in the Netherlands, which he had to break off when health problems developed. He might no longer see the sea from the window of his hospital room, and he was never to see it once more. That “seemed unfairly harsh to him,” his daughter Erika later wrote. After all, right here, at the end of his life, he enjoyed the sea with the devotion he once had as a child.
