Thomas Markle Arrested for Child Sexual Abuse Material in Florida

Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, was taken into federal custody in Florida on Friday.

The federal case against Markle centers on two storage units in the Los Angeles area that he has maintained for nearly two decades. According to a complaint filed in federal court, FBI agents discovered 78 items—including film negatives, books, and slides—that investigators allege contain child sexual abuse materials. Among the evidence cited in the affidavit are images purportedly showing Markle with prepubescent girls in various states of undress, including one photograph allegedly taken in a motel in the Philippines.

Federal Charges and the Path to Florida

The investigation gained momentum following reports last month that authorities in the Philippines were scrutinizing Markle’s activities. A spokesperson for the Philippine National Police confirmed to CBS News that the inquiry began after Thomas Markle Jr. turned over his father’s personal belongings to law enforcement. This handoff provided the critical link that led federal agents to the California storage units, where payments had been automated as recently as last month.

Bill Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, signaled a rigorous pursuit of the case, stating, “These allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr. Markle to the fullest extent of federal law.” Markle, who is scheduled for an initial court appearance in Tampa, faces a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison if convicted.

FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the gravity of the federal response in a statement: “Mr. Markle allegedly targeted innocent children and sought to steal their innocence through his criminal actions. This FBI will use every single resource at our disposal to protect innocent kids – any predator who targets children will have zero safe haven in this country or anywhere they try to hide.”

A Long-Standing Family Estrangement

The arrest of Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, in Florida on allegations of possessing child sexual abuse material is confirmed by federal authorities. In a statement provided to CBS News, Meghan confirmed that she has been aware of these grave allegations since 2018. She noted that information regarding her father’s conduct was shared with U.K. authorities at that time, which served as the catalyst for her decision to sever contact between her father and her children.

“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them,” the Duchess stated. The personal nature of this rift was further evidenced by a December 2025 incident, where video obtained by the Daily Mail captured Markle accepting a letter from his daughter while in a U.S. hospital. According to reports from the BBC, that letter contained a direct confrontation from Meghan, who wrote that she and authorities were aware he had abused young girls.

Federal Arrest Follows Contested Claims

While Markle has publicly contested the claims, the federal government’s move to make an arrest in Florida suggests that the evidence gathered from the Philippines and California has reached a threshold sufficient for formal charges.
