Washington (AFP) – The heroes of the fourth installment of the “Thor” saga, “Love and Thunder”, continue to thunder at the top of the North American box office this weekend, according to estimates on Sunday from the specialized firm Exhibitor Relations.

Between Friday and Sunday, the film directed by New Zealander Taika Waititi collected 46 million dollars in cinemas in the United States and Canada, down sharply from the 144 million garnered the week of its release.

Chris Hemsworth again and again lends his features to the Norse God of Thunder, who faces this time alongside Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson an intergalactic killer of deities, camped by Christian Bale.

The Marvel blockbuster once again supplants “Minions 2: Once Upon a Time Gru”, which ranks in second place with $26 million in revenue, for a total of $263 million since its release.

The animated film explores the origins of the franchise’s main character, the endearing failed villain Gru.

In third place slips “Where the crayfish sing”, adaptation of the book by American zoologist Delia Owens about a young girl who grew up in the heart of a coastal swamp in North Carolina in the 1950s. The teenage thriller garners 17 million dollars for its release.

“It’s a very good start for a film that mixes teenage romance and detective thrillers,” commented expert David Gross, from the Franchise Entertainment Research center, despite “weak reviews”.

Solid, the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” maintains very good performances by placing fourth with 12 million dollars accumulated for its eighth week on screens.

Since its release, Tom Cruise’s return to the US Army’s elite fighter pilot has generated $618 million.

“Elvis”, the baroque and extravagant biopic by Baz Luhrmann dedicated to the king of rock and roll, falls to fifth position with 7.6 million dollars since Friday.

Here’s the rest of the top 10:

6 – “Samurai Academy” ($6.3 million)

7 – “Black Phone” (5,3 millions de dollars)

8 – “Jurassic World: The World After” ($4.95 million)

9 – “A dress for Mrs Harris” (1.9 million dollars)

10 – “Buzz Lightyear” ($1.3 million)
