With their second album “Empires In The Sun” I was able to THORIUM immediately inspired and was a hope for the future for fans of European power metal. Now the Belgians are presenting “Extraordinary Journeys Pt. I” and invite you to these adventures in several parts.

There is still melodic, playful European-style power metal and it quickly becomes clear who THORIUM’s role models are. Happy melodies a la FREEDOOM CALLquick numbers towards GAMMA RAY and a singer who probably liked having Bruce Dickinson in his Walkman.

Once again, the Belgians are trying to deliver strong and authentic fare, showing great potential and wealth of ideas, but unfortunately not everything works as well as on the predecessor and some things seem a bit half-baked or clumsy, as if they were dealing with a first work do. Nevertheless, there are fat beats, crisp riffs and a few choruses that invite you to sing along, as well as some strong melodies that stick with you right from the first listen. But the Belgians also master quiet moments that are sprinkled in every now and then and thus ensure dynamism and variety in order to remain exciting over the entire distance, even if they don’t deliver anything particularly new.

So we’re left with a motivated, but somehow rushed Power Metal album that’s fun, but somehow you can’t shake the feeling that there was simply more going on, especially since its predecessor seemed a bit more mature and compact. If you like European power metal with playful melodies and primarily a fast pace, you will definitely find what you are looking for here.
