An event created on Facebook aims to organize a demonstration against the superyacht of Jeff Bezos, in Rotterdam. Thousands are planning a rotten egg toss on the 430 million euro ship.
We often complain about Facebook, and rightly so, but one feature is holding us back when considering closing our account: events. The tool is extremely practical for organizing birthdays, openings, parties, or finding exhibitions. It can even turn into genius when users hijack it for the “good” cause.
In the Nederlands, an event a bit special was created for June 1, 2022. Soberly named Throwing eggs at superyacht Jeff Bezos (Throwing eggs at Jeff Bezos’ superyacht), it already has several thousand pledges to participate, and more than 10,000 interested people, at the time of this writing. A figure that should increase considerably in the coming weeks.
But why such an event? The American billionaire has ordered a superyacht with a length of 127 m and a value of 430 million euros. Once equipped with its three huge masts, the sailboat will be too high to pass under the De Hef bridge to reach the open sea. This will require the dismantling of part of this historic work in Rotterdam, renovated in 2017 and which the town hall had promised never to dismantle again.
“Calling all Rotterdammers, bring a box of (rotten) eggs or if you want the vegan version, some tomatoes and let’s throw them en masse on Jeff’s superyacht as he sails through Rotterdam, indicates the description of the event organized by a certain Pablo Strörmann. Rotterdam was built from rubble by the people of Rotterdam, and we will not allow this (the dismantling of the bridge) for the phallus symbol of a megalomaniac billionaire. Not without a fight!”
