Thousands line Welsh streets as Bonnie Tyler returns home
Thousands of mourners lined the streets of Wales to bid farewell to legendary singer Bonnie Tyler as her coffin was brought home from Spain. The iconic pop vocalist died at the age of 75 on July 8.
The procession drew vast crowds. Admirers surrounded the hearse and threw flowers onto its hood while it drove slowly through a Welsh village. According to coverage from Page Six, the driver rolled down the back window to reveal the coffin. It was draped with a Welsh flag alongside a photo of the singer.
Medical emergency and hospital treatment in Portugal
Tyler, born Gaynor Sullivan, passed away at a hospital in Portugal. Her death resulted from an illness she was being treated for.
Prior to her passing, she had been admitted to a hospital near her home in Faro in May for emergency intestinal surgery. A day following that medical procedure, the singer of the bombastic 1980s hits “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero” was placed in a medically induced coma to assist in her recovery.
Devoted fans pay tribute to a local icon
Mourners swarmed the vehicle to create a driving path. Many left floral tributes outside of her home.
“She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales,” a fan told the Associated Press. “Her songs really did touch a lot of people here in Wales; we loved her a lot.”
From working-class roots to global superstardom
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales in 1951, Tyler grew up in a working-class family and dropped out of school at age 16 before beginning her music career in clubs. Her distinctive, raspy vocal style became her trademark following a 1976 surgery to remove vocal cord nodules.
Her career reached international heights when she teamed up with composer and producer Jim Steinman for the 1983 global smash “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” The track earned her a Grammy nomination for best female pop vocal performance.
Tour cancellations and final statements
Tyler had been scheduled to kick off her 2026 European tour in Malta on May 22 before her sudden health setbacks.
Her official cause of death has not been released. Her spokesperson noted at the time of her passing that a further statement would be issued.
