On the fringes of the protest, a car rammed into a demonstrator, injuring him slightly. It was initially unclear whether it was an attack or an accident.

Police Minister Ben-Gvir had demanded that Eshed take a firm hand against participants in the months-long mass protests against the government and the judicial reforms they were planning. Tel Aviv’s police district chief refused, saying he didn’t want to use “unreasonable force”. Ben-Gvir and Israel’s police chief Kobi Shabtai then wanted to transfer him to another department. Ashed refused.

Demonstrators blocked roads in several cities and a highway in Tel Aviv. The police used water cannons.

The government is resuming a hiatus in restructuring the judicial system, which aims to weaken the country’s highest court. Since then, anti-government demonstrations have picked up again. The government accuses the judges of excessive interference in political decisions. Critics see the separation of powers and the democratic order in danger. For months, there have been regular mass protests against the project in the country.

A Palestinian attacker injured at least seven people in an attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. Hamas spoke of an “initial reaction” to a large-scale military operation in Jenin, which the army ended on Wednesday night.
