Three soldiers injured when US plane crashed on northern Australian island

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Three US servicemen were taken to a hospital following a US Air Force aircraft crashed on a northern Australian island on Sunday during multinational military exercises, officials said.

One of the injured is in critical condition and the other two are stable, rescue helicopter operator CareFlight said in a statement.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said all three injured are Americans.

The patient who is in critical condition is a Marine, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

A Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft crashed on Melville Island during the Predators Run exercises involving the armed forces of the United States, Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and East Timor, the Australian Department of Defense said. .

The injured were airlifted to the Royal Darwin hospital, located regarding 100 kilometers (60 miles) to the south, CareFlight said.
