Baños Lara shared data on the incidence of childhood cancer in Mexico, emphasizing the need for comprehensive care for affected children.
He commented that between 2007 and 2015, Mexico registered 150 cases of childhood cancer per million inhabitants, with leukemia being the most prevalent type with 53.1%, followed by lymphomas with 8.9% and non-intracranial plasmas with 8.3%. He highlighted that prompt diagnosis and specialized medical care are crucial factors for the success of treatment in these cases.
He highlighted that the care of children with cancer goes beyond medical treatment and encompasses physical and mental aspects. Unfortunately, low-income families face difficulties in accessing comprehensive treatments, and many of them seek support from civil society organizations. In Mexico, there are around 50 organizations that support children and adolescents affected by cancer, working hard to achieve self-sustainability.
Baños Lara emphasized that a large part of the necessary resources come from events aimed at society, with artistic events being the most successful. She cited concerts, dance recitals and art auctions as activities that capture the public’s attention and generate essential funds to support children with cancer.
In the case of Una Nueva Esperanza, an association located in Puebla with 244 active users, 158 children are treated in active treatment and 86 patients are under surveillance. Dr. Baños Lara reported that in the 25 years of work, they have benefited 1,555 children and their families. Each patient represents a financial challenge, requiring between 10,000 and 30,000 pesos per month, excluding medication costs.
María del Rocío Baños highlighted the vital role of art in fundraising and announced upcoming art events. She added that society thus becomes a crucial ally in the fight against childhood cancer, demonstrating that the union of medicine and art can make a difference in the lives of children affected by this disease.
In his speech, José María Corte García, Director of Una Nueva Esperanza, highlighted Una Nueva Esperanza’s constant commitment to providing oncological treatment to children, young people and adolescents, being a major challenge that they have assumed every day. The foundation serves patients from zero to 21 years of age, offering not only chemotherapy, but also comprehensive services that cover psychological, nutritional, oral health and patient rehabilitation aspects.
Focusing on the reality of low-income families, the Director highlighted the importance of the shelter they provide, especially for those from the interior of the state and other entities such as Tlaxcala, Morelos, Guerrero and Hidalgo. Families receive three meals a day, accompanied by recreational services and transportation, evidencing Una Nueva Esperanza’s comprehensive commitment to the health and well-being of patients and their families.
Corte García announced two key upcoming events in fundraising for the foundation.
