Large-scale power failure and around 150 fire brigade calls after a heavy thunderstorm
UPPER AUSTRIA. A heavy thunderstorm caused around 150 fire brigade operations in central Upper Austria late on Sunday evening, reports laumat.at
Shortly after 9 p.m., a violent thunderstorm moved from the Innviertel over the Hausruckviertel, the central area in the direction of Lower Austria. There were numerous fire brigade operations. First and foremost, storm damage, flooding and fire operations after lightning strikes had to be dealt with. Hail was also reported in the Danube region.

There was a large-scale power failure in the city of Wels, Wels-Land and in some regions in Linz-Land and Steyr-Land. The disruption – triggered by a lightning strike in the national network – was remedied after around three quarters of an hour, at least for the majority of those affected.
Locked in the elevator
40 operations were counted in the city of Wels alone, 20 operations affected lift systems in which people were trapped due to the power failure. Many water ingress and two minor storm damage also had to be processed.
The all-clear was quickly given during the fire operations. In Wels-Pernau, for example, a fire was feared in a residential building after a lightning strike, but luckily no fire was found. However, there was greater damage to the traffic lights directly adjacent to the site of operation in the area of the intersection of the B1 Wiener Straße, Linzer Straße with the B137 Innviertler Straße and the B138 Pyhrnpass Straße. The lightning strike probably damaged some components there. A technician was still busy repairing the damage during the night hours.

Several storm damage had to be dealt with in the Linz-Land district. In Niederneukirchen, for example, a house was partially covered. On the construction site of the L564 Wolferner Straße between Hofkirchen im Traunkreis and St. Marien, the construction site equipment was severely damaged. Trees lay in the medium-voltage lines all around. The fire brigade and the road maintenance department were on duty.
Fire after lightning strike
In Tragwein (Freistadt district), nine fire brigades were briefly deployed in a small fire in a residential building after a lightning strike. Since the local and surrounding fire brigades were on duty during a fire operation in the neighboring community of Pregarten (Freistadt district), alarm level 2 was declared to be on the safe side. However, the all-clear was given just a few minutes after the alarm was raised. The small fire was automatically extinguished by the rain. The fire brigade checked the affected area and was then able to quickly end the operation.
