“Theurgia” is a collection of seven musical rites, revolving around a common thematic axis; transgressing the physical world. “Theurgia” stands for “divine work” in Greek and was developed as a term by the Neoplatonists. It describes a series of magical acts that aim to connect the human soul to a hierarchy of superior beings, leading up to the supreme being or so-called, The One.

“Theurgia” is the name of the debut of the symphonic death metal project THY SHINING CURSE and covers an interesting concept regarding rites of transcending the physical world. It’s regarding myths, cults and hideous rituals as well as the pursuit of divinity.

Musically and thematically, Leonidas Diamantopoulos’ Greek one-man project follows the paths of colleagues like SEPTICFLESH or ROTTING CHRIST, but tries to bring a very own drive to the seven tracks of the debut album. In addition to the well-known combination of death and black metal with orchestral and symphonic elements, there are also quiet, psychedelic or almost jazzy moments that are intended to underline the aforementioned rites.

And I can say that for a debut, this work is extremely mature, well thought out and, despite its technical sophistication, gets to the point fairly quickly. Nevertheless, just like with SEPTICFLESH, a certain hectic pace and strenuous parts are the order of the day. The sounds on “Theuriga” are intense, atmospheric, mystical and yet also brutal, rough and destructive. With female choirs, strong melodies and catchy choruses, they also ensure recognition and don’t shy away from cross-genre means. But Leonidas didn’t manage the project all alone and organized a capable guitarist in Gabe Pietzrak (PYRAMID) and additional vocal power in Cezar Moreira (CULT BURIAL).

For fans of symphonic extreme metal from SEPTICFLESH, WEB or other representatives, who are becoming more and more popular lately, this work is an absolute must-have, as THY SHINING CURSE definitely doesn’t have to hide from the genre greats.
