Tick-Borne Encephalitis: Monitoring, Cases, and Regions at Risk in France

2023-08-06 20:08:06

Since May 2021, encephalitis has been a disease closely monitored by Public Health France. Transmitted to humans by an infected tick, the virus can cause inflammation of the brain or spinal cord. Sequelae are very frequent since 40% of patients can keep sequelae for several years. THE first assessment carried out by Public Health France lists 71 cases in France between May 2021 and May 2023, including 30 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Although most cases are associated with a tick bite, the tick-borne encephalitis virus can also be contracted through the consumption of raw milk cheese, if an animal has been previously infected.

Haute-Savoie is the department with the most cases of tick-borne encephalitis since 2021, but the whole region is considered to be an important area for the circulation of the virus, with areas particularly at risk, such as:

the Livradois-Forez (Haute-Loire, Loire and Puy-de-Dôme) the Trièves Valley (Isère) the Mounts of Pilat (Loire) the North of the Ardèche.
