Pno room for doubt, the recently created tiger brigade swarms without pity for the tiger mosquito, on foot, by bike, in all the districts of the city of Périgueux (Dordogne). Pno room for doubt, the recently created tiger brigade swarms without pity for the tiger mosquito, on foot, by bike, in all the districts of the city of Périgueux (Dordogne). His fatal weapon: pedagogy with the population. Objectives: to introduce him to the right actions to adopt to resist this invading insect and encourage him to buy traps, via a financial aid system.

The trio, in green T-shirts with the “Tiger Brigade” logo, were on Tuesday April 25 in the shared gardens of Vésone, with several elected officials and users of the site.

80% of breeding sites are in the private domain. Since the beginning of the month, the tiger brigade has been in contact in the street, the gardens, and offers a telephone service on Thursday mornings (tel. 05 53 02 82 00). Virginie Guiné, municipal tiger mosquito referent, now works with Ophélie and Aymaine, hired in civic service. “We have already towed 1,200 flyers”, testify, all smiles, the two young people, delighted with the welcome reserved for them.

No doubt, too, the desire to do battle with the insect is shared. “The tiger mosquito bites ten times a minute, compared to 10 times in a quarter of an hour for a common mosquito”, explains Virginie Guiné. “Last year, we couldn’t stay outside in our gardens. It was violent and there were no real actions yet,” testifies Geoffroy Didier, resident, who cultivates a shared garden along the canal. “A lot of people were no longer eating in their garden. We can talk about physical, but also social and psychological nuisances, ”points out Gaëlle Ackerer, head of the hygiene and health department at the City.

Public meeting

“We don’t live in withdrawal, either, we must not exaggerate, but no one wants to catch dengue fever, chikungunya or Zika”, abounds Anne Karasseff, sensitized “as a gardener”. “It’s a question of public health, even if tropical diseases are not very present in France”, did not fail to underline Delphine Labails, mayor of Périgueux.

In the trunk of the brigade, not only very practical advice, but also the municipal financial aid system for the purchase of traps. ” It works well, online at perigueux.fr, and it goes rather quickly, ”explains Odile Dumas, a local resident who tested the device. The City grants aid up to 40% of the amount of the trap (between 35 and 160 euros depending on the model). Of the 10,000 euros credited in 2021, nearly 3,000 euros have been consumed. The same sum has already been voted in 2023.

“Not only do you have to do the right things, like emptying everything that can fill with water, maintaining your exteriors, betting on lemony aromatic plants, covering the barrels or cisterns with a veil, but above all not being the only ones to do them,” insisted the mayor.

Note, already, the holding of a new public meeting on the subject, Thursday, June 22 at 6:30 p.m., at the Jean-Moulin amphitheater of the media library, hosted by the company Altopictus. The hall of the town hall will also host an exhibition on insects throughout the summer to “pique curiosity”.
