Tiger mosquito: Corsica placed on red alert

With the hot weather, the tiger mosquito is making a comeback. Corsica is thus placed alongside sixty-six other departments on red alert where the species is declared “officially established and active”, notes the Vigilance Moustiques site.

Sixty-seven departments are therefore placed on red alert, which means that the tiger mosquito is “established and active” in these territories. Note that six other departments are placed in orange vigilance. The tiger mosquito has been “intercepted punctually in the last 5 years”, notes Vigilance Moustiques. These are Allier, Loir et Cher, Haute Loire, Oise, Yonne and Val d’Oise.

In total, seventy departments are colonized or in the process of being so, “i.e. nearly 67% of French territory”. Vigilance Moustiques also specifies that “departments which are on orange vigilance sooner or later switch to red vigilance.”

As a reminder, the bite of the Aedes albopictus, known as the “tiger mosquito”, can transmit dengue fever, chikungunya or the Zika virus. The species is recognizable by its black and white stripes.
