I’m less than a centimeter tall, I don’t make a sound, I have black and white stripes and I spoil your summer evenings for you, who am I? The tiger mosquito of course. Everyone will have found the answer, as this insect now present everywhere in France has become a plague as soon as the sunny days return.

L’Auringleta, the environmental and sustainable development education association of Langon, relaunched its tiger mosquito awareness training this Saturday, April 22. Free training funded by the Regional Health Agency, which takes very seriously this mosquito capable of transmitting diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya or the zika virus to humans.

About fifteen people took part in this first workshop organized in the gardens of the Auringleta in Fargues. “We didn’t eat out once last summer,” complained one participant. In two hours, environmental educator Sophie Ladril paints a portrait of this insect that arrived in Gironde in the early 2010s. eradication is now impossible.

“The most effective solution remains preventive control, which consists of eliminating all breeding sites”

Unlike the common mosquito, the tiger is a diurnal insect that will bite all day, but especially in the morning and evening, and silently. At night, it’s not him who comes to make “bzzz” in the ears and who prevents sleep.

Knowing it well also means knowing that its vital space is reduced to a radius of about 150 meters in flight. Good news because it means that we can hope to limit its proliferation. Sophie Ladril further specifies that “only the female stings”. “She needs protein, and therefore blood, to fertilize her eggs. A female lays about 150 eggs and only needs one centimeter of standing water for this.

The means of struggle

And now the solutions. Sophie Ladril advises against the use of electric diffuser, mosquito repellent on the skin or clothing, burners, etc. Their effectiveness is relative, but above all these products are toxic to humans. Also forget lemongrass essential oil or geraniums.

However, the fight is not in vain. The environmental educator recommends the use of mosquito nets, electric snowshoes and fans against which mosquitoes cannot fly. Last defense, wear long, loose clothing, as the tiger can bite through tight pants, even jeans.

As we can see, the means of active defense are slim. This is why the most effective solution remains the preventive fight which consists in eliminating all the breeding places, in other words the stagnant water points at home. Sophie Ladril recommends storing wheelbarrows, buckets, watering cans, toys, ashtrays, garbage cans and all materials that could collect water. After each rain, you have to empty the cups of pots (trick, you can fill them with sand), and everything that can act as receptacles.

And then we do not forget to pass the message to his neighbor. “We all have a share of responsibility in the fight against the tiger mosquito,” concludes Sophie Ladril.
