TikTok Launches New Tool for Labeling AI-Generated Content

TikTok is launching a new tool this week to help creators label AI-generated content, aiming to curb digital misinformation and comply with existing platform policies.

Combating Misinformation Through Mandatory Labeling

The fast-paced digital ecosystem is grappling with an influx of synthetic media. To address this, TikTok announced on Tuesday that it is rolling out a system designed to streamline how creators flag synthetic assets. Under the company’s existing AI policy, all manipulated content depicting realistic scenes must feature a clear label indicating that the media is fake or altered.

Deepfakes remain a primary vector for online deception. TikTok enforces a strict ban on deepfakes that mislead users about real-world events. The platform prohibits digital manipulation involving private figures and young people. However, the policy permits altered images of public figures under specific circumstances, such as artistic, educational, or satirical contexts.

Testing Automated Detection and Effect Renaming

Manual compliance is only part of the equation. Alongside creator tools, TikTok is launching a test phase this week for a native “AI-generated” label. This automated tag will eventually flag content that the platform’s backend detection systems identify as edited or created using artificial intelligence.

Transparency extends to the app’s native creative suite. TikTok confirmed it will rename its built-in effects that utilize artificial intelligence. These effects will explicitly incorporate “AI” into their titles and corresponding labels, making the underlying technology unmistakable for everyday users scrolling through their feeds.

Regulatory Pressure and the Global AI Arms Race

These platform updates do not happen in a vacuum. The race to police synthetic media is accelerating under intense scrutiny from international regulators. Regulators demand explicit labeling for text, photos, and video content generated by machine learning models to protect democratic integrity.

As the technology scales, platforms face a delicate balancing act. They must enforce strict guardrails against malicious deepfakes while preserving creative expression. TikTok’s latest rollout marks another step in standardizing how social networks track the boundary between human creativity and algorithmic generation.
