The government has significantly relaxed anti-epidemic measures, but the number of inbound tourists has not increased significantly. The Secretary for Culture and Sports, Yang Runxiong, admitted in the Legislative Council at the beginning of the month that there is still a big gap between the current number of tourists visiting Hong Kong and before the epidemic, and promised to strengthen publicity. It is reported that the government and the tourism industry will announce a series of measures on Thursday, including giving away 500,000 air tickets to attract overseas tourists to Hong Kong.

The epidemic has lasted for more than 3 years. The previous government has repeatedly launched anti-epidemic funds to support various industries. The Airport Authority allocated a budget of 2 billion yuan in 2020 to purchase 500,000 air tickets from Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Express and Hong Kong Airlines. Revive Hong Kong’s tourism industry when the epidemic subsides.

The HKTB once pointed out that once the AA confirms the arrangement for sending out 500,000 air tickets, the HKTB will be responsible for the promotion in overseas markets. Cheng Dingyue, Director-General of the HKTB, revealed that at least 100 million yuan has been set aside to launch large-scale global promotions. At the same time, tourists visiting Hong Kong will be distributed consumption coupons, which can be redeemed for dining, transportation, retail, scenic spots and other discounts with the QR code of the coupons.
