To celebrate Thérèse Bologna’s 100th birthday, her loved ones offered her a game of Scrabble with the double world champion in the discipline. A surprise which did not impress the centenarian who plays Scrabble three times a week.

Surrounded by her 4 children, her 9 grandchildren and her 14 great-grandchildren, Thérèse Bologna blew out her 100 candles on November 25 in Balma, near Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). A birthday she will remember for a long time. Because his loved ones have a nice surprise in store for him. Passionate about Scrabble, the centenarian was able to play a game with Benjamin Valor. A luminary in the world of Scrabble!

We called the French Scrabble federation which put us in contact with Benjamin Valour, classic Scrabble world champion in 2009 and 2017 and three times French champion. Even though he lives in Le Touquet in Pas-de-Calais, he immediately accepted!

Over a small glass of alcohol, the two players faced off under the eyes of the 40 guests. After several minutes of well-contested play (where Thérèse tried to position these words on all the triple counts) it’s Benjamin Valor who won the game by aligning 4 scrabbles !

Final score: 569 to 343. A little disappointed not to have won, Thérèse has fond memories of this unique game:

I was surprised. I would have preferred it to continue but we didn’t have much time. I wasn’t impressed. I am used to it ! I play Scrabble 3 times a week. I know a lot of techniques!

Thérèse Bologna, Scrabble champion

Thérèse, who lives with her daughters, has developed a passion for this game for around twenty years. “I play very regularly with my children and my friends. Scrabble allows me to maintain my memory.” And the centenarian has no intention of stopping: “I’m going to keep going until my memory fails me.” she assures.

And after playing against Benjamin Valour, Thérèse can now be proud of being the vice-world champion of Scrabble.
