A French study highlights the hitherto unsuspected action of vegetables such as broccoli or cabbage on our allergies.

At the mention of the word “broccoli”, both adults and children often have an expression of disgust on their faces. This vegetable is generally associated with traumatic memories, especially of bad meals in the canteen. However, broccoli is excellent for health.

Thanks to the many vitamins it contains, it contributes to take care of our skin and limit the appearance of wrinkles. It also has a beneficial effect on our cholesterol levels as well as on the health of our eyes. But French researchers from Inserm and the Institut Curie have discovered another quality in it.

Indeed, during a study on food compounds acting on our body, they found that broccoli and cabbage had an unusual power linked to allergies. The study in question is available online on the site of the specialized journal eLife as well as on the Inserm site.

Our diet: a determining factor in the severity of skin allergies

While the study focuses primarily on broccoli and cabbage, it reminds consumers of an important detail. In effect, food is not only used to give our body the nutrients and energy it needs to function. This can also impact our skin problems if it is not balanced enough.

In this area, one of the best known facts is that eating too much chocolate would promote the appearance of pimples. But not consuming enough cruciferous vegetables (i.e. the whole cabbage family, radishes or even turnips) would increase the risk of allergic reactions.

This is because cruciferous vegetables contain aromatic hydrocarbon receptors. These have the ability toreduce episodes of skin allergies if they are consumed in sufficient quantity. But according to the researchers, this first discovery would open the way to other fields of research. According to them, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables could help treat certain skin diseases.

The benefits of broccoli tested on mice

To reach these conclusions, the researchers conducted an experiment on mice with skin problems. The little guinea pigs were divided into two groups and each had a different diet. However, the researchers noticed that the mice consuming more aromatic hydrocarbon receptors had fewer skin allergies than the mice with a conventional diet.

Fact, Eating more broccoli may help people with skin allergies naturally reduce the condition. Satisfied with the results obtained, the researchers now wish to carry out similar experiments but with skin diseases such as psoriasis.
