“To save Lebanon”… Al-Rahi calls to go to the United Nations!

Patriarch Cardinal Mar Beshara Boutros Al-Rahi reminded in his Sunday sermon, “our nation’s deputies and those involved in political affairs, that the basis for the establishment of Lebanon in 1920 is cultural and religious pluralism in unity.”

And he continued, “Its basis after independence is the National Pact to live together in equality, and its basis after the Taif Agreement is the redistribution of the roles of the sects, so that the preamble to the constitution says: “There is no legitimacy for any authority that contradicts the Charter of Coexistence.”

He believed that “everything that the political and parliamentary group does is contrary to these foundations. It does not respect the idea of the establishment of Lebanon, partnership, pluralism, independence, the National Pact, Taif and its constitution.”

And he continued, “Is the aim of this shameful behavior to eliminate Lebanon’s privacy, values, and system? Is there a decision taken from a previous conception and design to demolish the existing Lebanon, and build on its ruins a draft state that does not belong to its people, its history, or its surroundings?”

And he said: “How do the representatives judge themselves when they meet nine times and do not elect a president of the republic? This means that they do not want to elect a president, or they are not qualified to elect a president, and therefore they challenge the existence of the Lebanese Republic, and they lose the people’s trust and respect for the brotherly and friendly countries that are working to save Lebanon. Aren’t the sessions of the Neyan Council, as they exist, to delude the people and the world that they are meeting to elect the president, while they are deceiving and camouflaging?

He considered it “necessary to turn to the United Nations and the decision-making countries to save Lebanon before it is too late. There is no escape from the internationalization of the Lebanese issue after the failure of all internal solutions.”

And he continued, “It is remarkable that those who thwart internal solutions are those who refuse internationalization. When the internal solution is disrupted and internationalization is rejected, it means that these parties do not want any solution to the Lebanese situation. Either Lebanon will be as they want it or it will not be. But everyone must know that Lebanon will be. As do all his loyal sons.

He pointed out, “There was strong opposition to the convening of the cabinet meeting last Monday with the minimum number of ministers and the maximum agenda, without stopping at charter representation in the session. The opposition took on a constitutional, political and sectarian dimension that we feared would happen before it happened and alerted us to it. We wished for the prime minister’s state.” Reconsidering and postponing the session for further consultation, and to determine the powers of a resigned government and conduct business in the absence of the President of the Republic, but unfortunately the government held its session with those who attended and there was no opposition.

He called on “the government to be careful in using its powers in order to ensure national unity and to prevent some from exploiting such meetings for political and sectarian purposes. The best that the government, especially its prime minister, can do is work on the Arab and international levels to speed up the election of a president for the republic.”

He said, “This is the solution while the country is deteriorating. The Maronite patriarchate does not get involved in conflicts between politicians and parties. Its positions remain above conflicts and political competition, and it only takes sides with the national right. It adheres to the inclusive national principles, historical constants, and the constitution with its pact dimension.”

He called on “the parties to rise above their struggles, in order to create the appropriate circumstance for successful meetings, otherwise there is no value in repeating meetings that go in the wind, as has happened three months ago.”
