Morocco is committed to a policy of liberalization of the maritime transport sector and the development of modern and competitive ports. This was stated by Mohammed Abdeljalil, Minister of Transport and Logistics, during the official opening ceremony of the first edition of TOC Africa held on Wednesday, September 20, in Tangier. He recalled that Morocco has adopted an advanced legal framework to regulate the construction, maintenance and operation of port facilities.
“The Kingdom has developed an ambitious port strategy for 2030, which constitutes the roadmap for the development of our country’s ports and paves the way for the participation of different actors from the public and private sectors,” said Mr. .Abdeljalil.
The speaker continued that the success of the Tangier Med port complex project, thanks to the vision of HM King Mohammed VI, is the best proof of Moroccan experience in this area. Which makes this project “a reference example for the development of future projects, at the national level, in particular the ports of Nador in the western Mediterranean and Dakhla Atlantic, which are nearing completion,” underlined Mr. Abdeljalil.
Organized by Tanger Med, this two-day meeting, which was held in partnership with Informa and TOC Worldwide, aimed to bring together key players in the maritime and logistics sector in Africa and the rest of the world, to exchange, debate and network. It stood out for the participation of 39 countries, including 20 African, and with 22 port authorities, including 16 African. Like Rotterdam, Singapore and Panama which respectively hosted TOC Europe 2023, TOC Asia 2023 and TOC Americas 2023, “Tangier is a place of international commercial exchange and a crossroads of meetings and crossing of paths both maritime and civilizational”, says Fouad Brini, president of the Tanger Med Group.
Considered the largest container port in Africa and the Mediterranean, Tanger Med is also positioned, according to the speaker, as an integrated industrial-port platform, serving the continent’s logistical competitiveness. “Fruit of the enlightened vision of HM King Mohammed VI, and in accordance with the desire to promote South-South cooperation, Tanger Med is fully in line with this vision by supporting all initiatives aimed at encouraging cooperation between port authorities and African special economic zones,” said Mr. Brini, noting that as a port and logistics player, “Tanger Med, as it did in the past by promoting initiatives in favor of port authorities and African Special Economic Zones, is committed to continuing cooperation, sharing of expertise and joint development.
The organizers want to make TOC Africa an annual event to bring together port stakeholders and logisticians in Tangier with a view to discussing best practices and the state of the art of the sector in Africa. “We want to continue to regularly organize Toc Africa in Tangier to highlight the port and logistics offer of Tanger Med and above all to exchange our experiences with the African port authorities and contribute to the implementation of the free zone. African exchange,” said Hassan Abraki, director general of the Tangier Med port authority.
Note that this first edition was distinguished by an exhibition aimed at highlighting the latest innovations in port equipment, machines and technology.
