Together for Change rejected the government’s manual of recommendations to talk about Malvinas

Together for Change presented a project to express their rejection of the publication called “Malvinas: sovereignty and memory. Recommendations for journalists” promoted by Miriam Lewisof the Public Defender’s Office, with the participation of the Malvinas and South Atlantic Islands Museum and the Secretary of MalvinasAntarctica and the South Atlantic, considering it tendentious, with a lack of historical rigor and conditioning the free exercise of the journalistic profession.

The bill was introduced by Senator Paul Daniel White accompanied by the representatives of the upper house Stella Maris Olalla, Juan Carlos Romero and Carmen Alvarez Rivero.

“The pamphlet in question was conceived as a small manual of “recommendations for an adequate journalistic treatment of the sovereignty dispute with the United Kingdom on Malvinas and South Atlantic IslandsWhite explained.

“The Public Defender must resign from her position because no one in a democracy can claim the monopoly of what to say relying exclusively on partial sources and showing off a manipulation attempt aviesa of both history and journalistic profession”.

“Miriam Lewin acts as official propaganda agent rather than public defender. Does not defend freedom of expression, but, on the contrary, intends to condition it, trying to impose on journalists a Kirchnerist vision of the Malvinas Cause. A reductionist story and biased that, in addition to being improper, deliberately evades facts by misrepresenting history.”

“All in order to extol the figure of his political boss, forgetting important issues such as, to cite just a few examples, the immense contribution of the President Arthur Illia and its Foreign Minister Zavala Ortíz, the cunning sinking of the ARA General Belgrano, the baptism of fire of our Air Force and the heartbreaking number of ex-combatant suicides”.

“Once again, as with the Human Rights policy, Kirchnerism intends to appropriate a cause that belongs to all Argentines and, by the way, with a little disguised censorship vocation, he recommends to journalists how they should do their job”.

“The lack of historical and documentary rigor of the recommendations that I reject is notable. The plural and direct voice of the ex-combatants, the true protagonists of the events, has not been taken into account, nor has reference been made to the historical context and the experiences of the Argentines of that time. Important centers for veterans, ex-combatants and combatants (because many now consider themselves that way, albeit through the culture of peace) have not been consulted in the country and in my province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands” .

“But beyond these reprehensible details, it is inconceivable that after 39 years of uninterrupted democracy there are officials who intend to impose on the press and the citizenry a narrative that is biased for convenience”, concluded the Fuegian senator.
