Togolese National Team Coach Philod’s Journey: From the African Cup of Nations to the World Cup Qualifiers

The “Horses” team exited the tournament at the hands of neighboring Mali, after finishing second in its group behind Angola, ahead of Algeria.

Philod participated for the first time in the African Cup of Nations finals, after coming close to that on more than one occasion.

The French coach (64 years old) was shot in the arm during an attack on the Togolese national team bus by separatists in the Angolan enclave of Cabinda, prior to the 2010 Nations Cup.

Philod returned home with the rest of the Togolese national team before the start of the tournament.

Philod then led Sudan to the finals of the last edition in Cameroon two years ago, but he was dismissed weeks before the start of the tournament after a poor performance in the 2021 Arab Cup in Qatar.

Philod joins a long list of coaches who left after participating in the Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, including Djamel Belmadi, coach of Algeria, Roy Vitoria, coach of Egypt, Tom Saintfiet, coach of Gambia, Chris Hughton, coach of Ghana, and Jalal El Kadri, coach of Tunisia.

Burkina Faso is preparing to face Egypt next June, in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
