Tokio Marine HCC Appoints Brian Alva as Cyber Underwriting Chief

Tokio Marine HCC – Cyber & Professional Lines Group announced the appointment of Brian Alva as Senior Vice President of Underwriting to lead cyber and tech underwriting. Alva joins the Encino, California-based group from Travelers, bringing over 15 years of cyber and professional liability experience to strengthen the company’s risk solutions portfolio.

Building Portfolio Strategy Across Specialty Lines

Alva brings a career spanning product development, portfolio strategy, and distribution leadership. Before his tenure at Travelers as Vice President of Specialty Cyber, he held senior leadership roles at Corvus Insurance and NAS Insurance Services.

Michael Palotay, Chief Executive Officer of CPLG, emphasized the evolving demands of digital risk markets. According to Palotay, managing modern digital liabilities requires tightly integrating underwriting judgment with claims handling, data science, and risk engineering. Alva’s mandate includes aligning these functions to deliver more consistent outcomes for retail and wholesale brokers.

“Cyber risk continues to evolve at extraordinary speed, and the opportunity for CPLG is to combine underwriting excellence with the data, technology and services needed to stay ahead of that change,” Alva stated regarding his strategic goals for the group.

Returning to Familiar Roots in Encino

For Alva, this transition marks a homecoming. He spent nearly nine years with NAS Insurance Services prior to its becoming part of the broader Tokio Marine HCC ecosystem. During that tenure, he helped scale the organization’s professional liability and cyber footprint across national markets. Now, operating under the Tokio Marine HCC umbrella—backed by the parent Tokio Marine Group, which was founded in 1879 and held an $84 billion market capitalization as of June 30, 2026—Alva steps back into a familiar institutional framework.

CPLG operates locally out of Encino, California, while maintaining corporate alignment with Tokio Marine HCC’s headquarters in Houston, Texas. The group’s primary domestic insurance entities carry financial strength ratings of ‘A+’ (Strong) from S&P Global Ratings and ‘A++’ (Superior) designations, providing the capital backing required to underwrite large-scale enterprise policies in volatile threat landscapes.
