The Tokyo Christmas Market will be held for 33 days from November 23, 2023 to December 25, 2023, mainly at the Meiji Jingu Gaien Stadium in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo.
According to a press release, the event is in its ninth year, and the last time it was held at Hibiya Park, it attracted 250,000 visitors. This time, the scale has expanded with the theme of international exchange, with 25 restaurants and 30 miscellaneous goods stores, and 400,000 people are expected to visit.
However, on the 27th, the fifth day of the event, when people bought sausages at the Junkie Food Stand at the market, they found that the sausages they received were different from the store illustrations, and a photo was posted comparing the sausages. The illustration shows five different types of sausages, and the English version clearly states that there are five types, but he says he ate only five of each type. The white box containing the sausage had a lid on it, and they noticed it after moving to the food court, but the venue was so crowded that they decided not to cancel.
Junkie Food Stand sells items such as “Roast Beef from Hokkaido,” and this sausage platter was on sale for 1,000 yen including tax. However, in the photo posted, the upper part of the assorted display, as well as some of the Korean and Chinese writings, were hidden with tape.
The photo post has garnered over 14,000 likes and is receiving a lot of attention. Two similar complaints were reposted by photo posters, one of which featured a photo of sausages that looked almost identical.
Junkie Food Stand’s on-site manager (51) explained the situation to J-CAST News on December 1st.

According to an explanation from the site manager, when the event first opened, five types of sausages with different appearances, such as garlic, chorizo, and herb, were sold as a set. However, the sausages that go well with beer sold well, and by the third day, November 25th, the set was out of stock.
So I procured five different kinds of sausages, including arabiki, but they all looked almost the same. He put tape on the five Japanese, Chinese, and Korean sections to avoid confusion and misunderstandings, but he forgot to tape the English sections. Furthermore, the part-time worker was told to enter five types, but since they all looked the same, he may have made a mistake in entering the same types. He sold 50 to 60 meals, but admitted some may have been five bottles of each type.
“I didn’t want to sell them by lying. If they were all the same type, then it’s a lack of management on my part.”
One complaint from a customer was that the person who bought the product once brought him a sausage and asked, “What is this?” At that time, I noticed that there was no tape on the English part, and since the person who bought it decided to eat it as is, I refunded half the price, 500 yen.
On November 28th, the day after the photo was posted on X, I had a discussion with the Tokyo Christmas Market Executive Committee Secretariat and was advised of this matter. Starting on the 30th, we stopped selling the sausage platter and removed the illustrations from the store.
“We apologize to everyone who was looking forward to coming to the event.This is the first time something like this has happened to us, and we will be more careful from now on.”
The person in charge of the event works in food sales in Osaka and also does cooking at events.
On December 1st, the Tokyo Christmas Market Executive Committee said, “The photo was posted, so we have told them to improve it, and the menu has been changed. I can’t answer that,” a representative told reporters. There are no plans to provide an explanation on the official website.
