Books – Ahmed Massad:

Tomato prices witnessed a slight increase in the market, as the price of a kilo is 15 pounds in retail markets, and the average price of tomatoes is about 8.5 pounds, with the lowest price per kilo of tomatoes reaching 5 pounds compared to 15 pounds per kilo in the market.

Engineer Mahmoud Fawzi, head of the Central Department of Horticulture and Agricultural Crops at the Ministry of Agriculture, said: There are campaigns on vegetable cultivation to provide all technical recommendations and instructions to farmers, especially tomato farms, by following sound systems to protect plants from climate changes that the country is exposed to.

He added that the total cultivated areas of the tomato crop are about 500,000 acres, grown on 3 loops, including the winter loop, summer loop and Nile loop, with a total productivity ranging between 6 to 7 million tons.

He noted the rise in prices, which will not last long because there are governorates preparing to harvest the tomato crop.

He pointed out that the high prices of tomatoes are due to several reasons. First: the high temperatures since the beginning of the summer season, which led to a decline in productivity.

According to the statistics of the monthly bulletin of foreign trade data issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics for the month of March 2023 compared to the same month of last year, Egypt’s exports of fresh tomatoes increased by 25.2%, to reach $5 million in March 2023, compared to $4 million in the same month.
