Toni Polster: Emergency surgery after stomach perforation

The national team’s record goalscorer underwent emergency surgery in a Vienna hospital after suffering a perforated stomach. Several media outlets reported this late on Thursday evening. The 59-year-old was admitted on Thursday. After surgery, Polster had to be taken to the intensive care unit, according to a report.

Polster actually wanted to appear in front of the press on Thursday as part of his dispute with the Football Association over three unrecognized international matches and goals. He canceled the appointment at short notice at the premises of his club Wiener Viktoria, where he is the coach of the fighting team, because he was ill.

Polster is the national team’s record goalscorer with 44 international goals. His 95 international matches have only been surpassed by Marko Arnautovic, David Alaba, Andreas Herzog and Aleksandar Dragovic. As a coach, he has been coaching Wiener Viktoria, who play in the Regionalliga East, since 2011, interrupted by a short stint at Admira.
