Greece went down fighting against Hungary, in a dramatic semi-final decided on penalties 13-11 (9-9), where our National team missed the first two and the Magyars were on point in everything. Now the girls of Alexia Kammenou will claim the bronze medal against Spain.
The match
The first eight minutes of the big semi-final against two traditional powers of the sport started in the best way for our National Team. Irene Ninou picked up where she left off with Italy and with three consecutive goals made it 3-1, giving Greece a two-goal lead, before the Magyars responded with two goals of their own to draw the match (3-3 ) in the second eight minutes.
The continuation was similar to the closing of the first eight minutes, with Hungary finding a goal from close range with Parkes and completing the upset for the Mihok athletes. With the attack stuck and the Hungarian defense responding, Eleftheria Pleuritou had to come up with a powerful shot to level the match again and give Greece a boost.
This was also the turning point for the players of Alexia Kammenou, who continued to raise the stakes and found two more goals with Giannopoulou and Hydirioti, before Parkes from the striker’s position reduced to one goal and Granda equalized with a class goal for the final 6-6 of the second eight minutes.
The dramatic development in the match continued in the third eight minutes, where the nervousness for both teams appeared. This resulted in just two goals being scored, one each. Greece found their seventh goal with Irini Ninou, while Hungary responded to the player above by increasing their percentage to 50% (4/8).
