A multinational research team from the United States, South America, Europe, Africa and other regions analyzed the data of 1,799 patients who had suffered from ischemic stroke, and also analyzed the medical records of 439 patients with cerebral hemorrhage. Through a questionnaire survey, relevant sleep data of the participants in the past month were collected, including sleep duration, sleep quality and other indicators, and it was found that various sleep problems were associated with an increased incidence of stroke.

The study found that those who slept less than five hours a night were three times more likely to have a stroke than those who slept seven hours, and those who slept more than nine hours a night were about twice as likely to have a stroke.

The team also analyzed patients with sleep apnea and found that participants with sleep apnea were more likely to have a stroke than others. Participants with snoring problems had a stroke rate 91% higher than normal people; participants with wheezing and snorting noises had a stroke rate more than three times that of normal people. In addition, participants who took a lunch break of more than 1 hour had an 88% higher risk of stroke than ordinary people. If there are more than one sleep problem, the risk of stroke will increase simultaneously.

Study author Christine McCarthy, MD, National University of Ireland, Galway, also emphasized that the results presented in the study only explored the association between bad living habits, sleep and stroke, and did not represent a causal relationship between them. Poor sleep quality does not necessarily directly lead to stroke, but it is a major risk factor for stroke.
