The health provider entities, better known as EPS, were created in 1993 thanks to Law 100, which allowed private companies to enroll in the general social security system and also collect the contributions that workers make by law for access the service.
Despite this, the Petro government has shown itself since the campaign as an enemy of these companies. On repeated occasions, the current president has lashed out against the companies, assuring that they could soon be finished, due to their conditions, since several have gone bankrupt in recent years.
Which are the EPS that owe the most money in Colombia
The most recent report from the Superintendency of Companies showed which were the largest companies in the sector, but also how their finances are. It must be taken into account that these companies account for 7% of the country’s gross domestic product and generate more than 100,000 direct jobs.
Nueva EPS: This health provider company is the largest in the country. It is in eighth place in the ranking of the largest. Its debt is 5.4 trillion pesos and its assets are 5.9 trillion. The total patrimony is 485,000 million. Its operating income was 14 trillion pesos during 2022. Total Health: The liabilities of this entity are in the order of 2.8 trillion and assets 3.2 trillion. The total equity is 413,939 million pesos and its operating income closed 2022 at 6.2 trillion pesos. EPS Sanitas: this company is the third in the ranking of the largest EPS. It had operating income of 8.7 billion pesos. The current debt of this company is 2.3 trillion and assets are in the order of 2.4 trillion. Its current patrimony is 76,000 million pesos.FAMISANAR LTDA. CAFAM – COLSUBSIDIO EPS: these EPS had a debt of 2 trillion pesos during 2022 and their finances are in the red, since currently their assets are 947,006 million pesos. The total equity is in negative numbers and is -$1 billion. EPS SURA: This is another of the largest in the country. The company’s debt is 1.8 trillion pesos. Total assets are 2.1 trillion and the company’s equity is 237,004 million pesos. In the general ranking it is in position 15. It is the first Antioquian health company in the country. Its operating income in 2022 was 9.3 trillion pesos.

In this way, 258,313 users of this health promoting entity will have to be transferred by the Ministry of Health, to other providers of the fundamental service.
While the transfer occurs, the EPS will have to continue with the responsibility of providing the service to citizens.
According to SuperSalud, the duty of health providers is to guarantee the continuity, timeliness, and quality of the service, for which reason, it requested them to “refrain from denying, suspending, or closing care for the population affiliated with Asmet Salud.” .
The health sector surveillance entity emphasized that it will be waiting, so that users have access to the necessary services.
In accordance with the provisions of the Superintendency, since May 24, 2023 there was already an order to begin the administrative action of revocation. But only until June 21 was the partial revocation decided, through a resolution.

It must be remembered that, since May, a forced intervention of the EPS was anticipated, which would last for one year, during which the situation would be reviewed to face the critical economic outlook that existed in the provider. Furthermore, a good part of the receivables were overdue for more than 6 months, as the Superintendency warned at the time.
