Top Gun vs. the Machine

Do you remember the excellent scene of Invasions barbaresby Denys Arcand, when the character played by Stéphane Rousseau wants to set up a room for his sick father in an empty room of a hospital?

The temple guardians

The union representative played with truculence by Jean-Marc Parent tells him that this will not be possible.

“Hey, look, there’s nothing going to be done here without the union, OK? It will start with the union, and it will end with the union.

“Right now, you may not realize it, but you’re talking to me about extra time…”

Ronald, the union representative, is not alone in not liking Stéphane Rousseau’s idea. There is also Pauline Joncas-Pelletier, the director of the hospital, played by Lise Roy.

Listen to Richard Martineau’s editorial, where he discusses current events with Alexandre Dubé via OLD :

“It’s amazing. This is an approach that fits entirely within the context of our awareness programs for family workers but unfortunately, the availability of our infrastructure has been targeted according to the ministry’s directives as part of the ambulatory shift so it It is absolutely impossible to prioritize elements of solutions at the level of the individual beneficiary…

“You must understand that our resource allocations are focused on a method of distributing care managed according to the parameters decided by the consultation table of administrative region 02…”

And blah, blah, blah…

On one side, a strong-armed trade unionist who rides machines. On the other, a soporific bureaucrat who talks until she’s dead.

Two rings of leather who ensure that nothing, absolutely nothing will change in the kingdom of immobility.

It is temple guardians like these that Minister Dubé’s Top Gun will have to face.

It’s best to get up early…

Pout pout pout

It’s all well and good, appointing a Top Gun to shake things up.

But as Paul Brunet, from the Council for the Protection of the Sick, told me at QUB: will this Top Gun have real room to maneuver or will he be a prisoner of the machine?

Will he make the decisions or will he be a simple puppet in the hands of deputy ministers?

You know the old gag: how many politicians does it take to change the health care system?

And.

But the system needs to WANT to change.

There are thousands of Ronalds and Pauline Joncas-Pelletiers in the health care system.

Pencil pushers who have every interest in nothing changing.

“It’s going to start with us and it’s going to end with us.”

In Top Gun 1 and 2, Tom Cruise is hated by his superiors because he does as he pleases and refuses to meekly obey orders.

This is what we call in English a “maverick”.

A rebellious, non-conformist and independent individual who acts outside the rules.

That’s great, nominating someone who can fly a Grumman F-14 Tomcat fighter (the plane Cruise flies in the movies).

But if the control tower is run by Ronald and Pauline Joncas-Pelletier, Top Gun won’t go far.
