Video games, an activity reserved for under 15s? Not so sure. This is what the eWeek festival will prove to you, which returns for its third edition to Torcy, in Seine-et-Marne, on Saturday November 18 and Sunday November 19, 2023. The opportunity to highlight this constantly evolving field, however unknown to the general public.
Open this universe to everyone
Created in 2020, the eWeek festival originally aimed to reclaim the world of video games, but also to be able to bring all members of the family around the console, whatever their age. “As time goes by, the event is becoming an unmissable event that speaks to everyone,” says Jérémy Martainville, municipal councilor responsible for innovation and new technologies in Torcy.
And the programming effectively leaves room for all sensibilities: from retro arcades to remember the 1980s to the latest games enhanced with augmented reality tools, several decades of video game history are on offer to the visitor.
These innovations are, moreover, a real challenge for countries today. “It’s a growing industry. Now we need to know which country will be in the lead in this area, and which will stay on the platform,” he continues.
If today, France is fairly well placed in this real competition, it must be able to maintain its place. To do this, we must encourage vocations. This is perhaps what will happen inside the Science Tour laboratory truck, which will offer participatory scientific activities, but also introductions to coding.
eSports is not contrary to sport
For a long time, the collective imagination has retained the image of a video game enthusiast as a person with a poor lifestyle. Those days are now over, and eSports is now considered a real activity. “Esports has a lot of connections to sports, it just depends on what you mean by ‘sport’. “Reaction peaks from video game players have been observed, equal to those experienced by Formula 1 drivers,” explains Jérémy Martinville.
Better still, the skills developed by these “esports enthusiasts” are sought after on CVs by companies in the sector. Concentration, steely mentality, stubbornness are all skills that athletes can acquire over hours of play. “It is important to understand this rapidly developing sector, especially for parents. We must therefore make the reality of these professions known,” assures the elected official.

Tournaments for everyone
During the festival, numerous tournaments will be offered to visitors. Thus, an FC 24 tournament on PS5 is organized on Saturday November 18. To participate, all you need to do is register with the Municipal City Animation Office (Omac). Participation costs five euros.
A Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament, on Nintendo Switch, is also offered. Registration is free and can be done on Helloasso, at the following link:
Moreover, real discipline is required of all those who work in this environment today. “There is real attention paid to health, and in particular to diet among eSportspeople. This is also why awareness stands will be present on site, to warn against addictions,” he adds.
Note that two exhibitions, on the ecological impact of video games and on cyber scams, will be offered on site. Another way to warn young people and reassure parents.
