Toronto explodes in the 3rd and pummels Boston at Fenway Park

BOSTON — Jackie Bradley Jr. doubled and scored during an eight-inning drive against his former team as the Toronto Blue Jays blew out the Boston Red Sox 9-3 on Tuesday night.

George Springer had two hits and drove in three runs in his return to the lineup as designated hitter.

The Blue Jays (66-55) earned their fifth win in six games to trail the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League wild-card playoff race.

Ross Stripling (6-3), who touched on a perfect game last week and now had another efficient night, gave up one run on six hits and struck out six in six innings.

The Red Sox (60-63) have lost four of their last five meetings.

Boston starter Josh Winckowski (5-7) lasted just 2 2/3 innings on the mound. He allowed six runs, six hits and two walks. He has given up 12 runs in seven 2/3 innings in his last two starts.

Due to the rain in the afternoon in Boston and the persistent storms in the area, the start of the game was delayed an hour.

For the Red Sox, Mexican Alex Verdugo 5-0. The Dominicans Rafael Devers 4-3, an RBI, and Franchy Cordero 3-0, a run scored. Puerto Rican Enrique Hernández 4-1, one RBI.

For the Blue Jays, the Dominicans Vladimir Guerrero 5-2 and Teoscar Hernández 5-1, one scored, one RBI. Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. 5-1, one scored, one produced. Mexican Alejandro Kirk 3-0, one scored.
