The Henry Marshall Tory Building is undergoing a series of renovations aimed at enhancing the student experience. Recently completed upgrades to three classrooms, B87, B95, and B45, offer a glimpse into the university’s commitment to providing accessible and modern learning environments.

Accessibility and Modernization Take Center Stage

Prior to the renovations,these classrooms featured tiered seating,posing accessibility challenges for students with mobility limitations. Now, the tiered seating has been leveled, creating a more inclusive and accessible space for all learners. In addition to increased accessibility, the rooms boast updated lighting, comfortable seating arrangements, and an enhanced capacity for students.

“Renovating these classrooms helps the university maximize the usage, efficiency, quality, and utility of its current spaces, ensuring they are functioning at full capacity and meeting today’s standards of technology, interdisciplinary learning, and leading-edge education,” says Deputy Provost Melissa Padfield, emphasizing the importance of these upgrades.

The new classrooms feature plush, fold-down, movie-theater-style seating with larger side desks that flip up from the side.A large platform desk at the back provides increased physical accessibility, catering to diverse learning needs. While pleased with the upgrades, Muehlenbachs also acknowledges some minor adjustments instructors may need to make. He points out, “There are some variations in technology between rooms. Such as, the cord configurations aren’t always standard, so it requires a little adaptation.”

Muehlenbachs suggests a pedestrian walkway connecting Tory to the Earth Sciences building to improve accessibility between the two structures. Beyond that,he finds the renovations to be “fantastic,” acknowledging both the positive impact on learning and the importance of continuous improvement.
