Spain is preparing for its first total solar eclipse to cross the mainland in more than a century on Aug. 12. While millions of people are expected to gather across northern and central Spain for some of mainland Europe’s best views of the event, authorities have launched a large public safety campaign to manage the influx of visitors amidst scorching summer temperatures and active wildfires.
Wildfire Prevention and Public Safety
The anticipated celestial event is expected to draw at least 500,000 additional visitors, according to Spanish authorities. This surge in travel comes as much of the country remains on alert with temperatures forecast to climb above 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) by the national weather agency, AEMET. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated that extreme preventive measures are necessary due to the intense pressure on natural areas
and the accumulated dryness of vegetation.
The urgency follows a destructive wildfire in late July that devoured 500 square kilometers (193 square miles) in Ávila, central Spain, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people. With several smaller wildfires still active in central and southern regions, the ministry has deployed more than 33,500 law enforcement officers to access points and observation areas. Officials are urging visitors to avoid littering, lighting fires, or parking in areas with dry vegetation to prevent any sparks that could ignite new fires.
Viewing the Totality
The eclipse will occur around sunset when the sun, moon, and Earth align. Totality—the period when the moon completely obscures the sun’s light—is expected to last less than 2 1/2 minutes in Spain, having dwindled from its maximum duration off the west coast of Iceland. In Medinaceli, a Roman-era hilltop town in northeast Spain, skywatchers have already begun securing viewing points and crowding local bars and restaurants.
Experts and authorities emphasize that specialized eclipse glasses are essential for safe viewing. According to NASA, viewers should use glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard, as regular sunglasses are insufficient. Safe viewing is required even when only a sliver of the sun is visible; naked-eye viewing is only permissible during the brief moment of totality.
International Impact and Scientific Interest
While Spain and a small patch of Portugal will witness the event, the path of totality also includes slivers of Greenland, northern Russia, and Iceland. In Iceland, the event marks the first total solar eclipse visible from the capital since 1433 and the first for the country since 1954. This has led to a surge in tourism, with average room rates in Reykjavík exceeding $1,000 for Wednesday night—roughly double the rates for 2025, according to Lighthouse Intelligence.
Beyond the crowds, the eclipse serves as a natural laboratory for astronomers. Professional and amateur observers will position themselves along the band of totality in Spain to capture images of the solar corona, the sun’s atmosphere. This scientific effort continues a history of eclipse observation that dates back to antiquity, including a clay tablet from Ugarit in present-day Syria from 1223 BCE.
Coinciding Celestial Events
The eclipse coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, which occurs when Earth passes through debris from the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Because the moon’s illuminated side is facing the sun, the lack of bright moonlight provides ideal conditions for viewing. In locations where the eclipse occurs around sunset, observers may be able to see Perseid meteors during the minutes of totality. Under ideal conditions, the Perseids can produce up to 100 shooting stars per hour.
