Across the country, schools will close due to the total solar eclipse on April 8. The closures come as many cities, particularly those in the path of totality, prepare to navigate unprecedented traffic as crowds flock to watch it.

Many are also closing to offer families the opportunity to witness together what could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In Illinois, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, which is in the path of totality and will host a festival to celebrate the solar event, canceled classes for the day.

“Classes on Eclipse Day (Monday, April 8) will be canceled, but the university will be open. Students will not be in class that day and are encouraged to participate in the exciting events and activities on campus,” it reads. the university website. “All offices will be open throughout the day, but may close for a period during the afternoon so that everyone can experience the totality.”

Other schools in the area, including Carbondale Elementary School District 95, Carbondale Community High School, Giant City Consolidated School District 130 and Unity Point Community Consolidated School District 140, will also close during the solar eclipse.

Alton Community Unit School District No. 11 in southern Illinois will have an early dismissal for the eclipse and Waterloo Community Unit School District No. 5 will close completely.

Across the Midwest, several schools have reported closures or shifts to e-learning due to the rare celestial event. These include many in Indiana and Ohio.

Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indiana said its decision to cancel in-person classes that day came “after great consideration of all the factors and uncertainties of the day.”

“Instead of coming to school that day, students will have asynchronous and/or synchronous assignments to complete remotely, and those plans will be available soon,” the school wrote on social media.

“We encourage students and families to take advantage of the opportunity to experience the total solar eclipse together. We will have educational resources and eclipse glasses available for all students as we get closer to this occasion.”

Indianapolis Public Schools also announced closures due to the event.

“Indianapolis Public Schools will be closed for this celestial event, but families are encouraged to view this rare phenomenon safely,” the district announced.

Meanwhile, some cited safety concerns.

“The timing of its totality will be just as students leave school,” Speedway Schools wrote in an alert. “For safety reasons, all Speedway schools will be closed on Monday, April 8.”
