During a turbulent Annual General Meeting, the CEO of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné, announced the study of a wind and solar energy project in Morocco with the aim of exporting electricity to Europe. Despite pressure from protesters and the government for a faster transition to clean energy, the group’s climate strategy was adopted by 88.76% of shareholders.

TotalEnergies plans to invest more in low-carbon energies and to reach 100 GW of renewable electricity capacity by 2030. However, the group remains involved in controversial projects related to liquefied natural gas and oil in several countries.

At the very eventful Annual General Meeting held on Friday, Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies, informed that the company was studying a major project combining wind and solar energy in Morocco, with the aim of exporting electricity to Europe. This announcement was made as part of the presentation of the group’s climate strategy, during a meeting which took place under pressure from environmental protesters and the government, urging TotalEnergies to accelerate its transition away from fossil fuels.

Despite attempts by environmental activists to disrupt the event, they were kept at bay by the intervention of the police who used tear gas. Nevertheless, the central theme of this annual general meeting was unquestionably the climate, according to AFP reports.
After three hours of discussions largely dominated by this question, the shareholders present on site or online adopted, at the level of 88.76%, the group’s Climate strategy, thus including the study project in Morocco.

Although TotalEnergies does not intend to significantly reduce its direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decade, the company plans to allocate a third of its investments to low carbon footprint energies and to achieve a capacity of 100 GW of renewable electricity by 2030.
The French group is currently involved in numerous liquefied natural gas and oil projects, whether in the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Papua or Uganda, with the controversial Eacop heated pipeline project, which has become a media symbol of the fight against oil exploitation.
