The events took place not far from Port Louis last Wednesday in the parking lot of a shopping center, as reported by local media. A 56-year-old Belgian tourist on vacation in Mauritius had her bag stolen by a man. The attack was violent and the victim had to be taken to hospital. But the story does not end there since the fifty-year-old’s bag contained 4,000 euros in cash as well as her mobile phone.
Unfortunately, theft from tourists in Mauritius is becoming commonplace. Several months ago a Czech tourist found herself face to face with a man pointing a gun at her and ordering her to give him her bag. Very bad publicity for Paradis Island which is trying as best it can to develop the tourism sector.
