In his welcoming speech to the conference, which kicked off today at the historic Hofburg Palace in the Austrian capital, Vienna, he added that the concept of “sustainability” revolves mainly around balance and relates to how to meet the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations while ensuring a balance between the three pillars of sustainability: “economic viability, environmental protection and justice.” Social”.

Al-Ghais added that “inclusivity” is about ensuring that all opinions are heard in discussions about energy transitions, developing and developed countries; Producers and consumers, since inclusiveness means adhering to the principle of common and differentiated responsibilities. This means that there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to the climate challenge. Instead, there are multiple paths to reaching the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The Secretary-General of OPEC indicated that the theme of the conference is looking to the future and in view of this trend, we are proud to have joined the engineers of the future of our world “young people and students from all over the world”, and we encourage them to maximize the opportunities offered by this conference.

Al-Ghais reviewed the importance of oil in the global energy mix and the primary role of the industry in reducing carbon emissions, in addition to OPEC’s efforts to achieve market stability, reduce the environmental footprint, and move towards a “sustainable and comprehensive energy transition.” He said: We want to ensure a future without emissions, harnessing technologies that can achieve that goal will be one of the prevailing topics in this conference.

And he continued, saying: Our location today, in the Hofburg Palace, reminds us of the unique relationship between “OPEC” and the host country, the Republic of Austria. Since the organization of “OPEC” established its headquarters here 58 years ago, we have a special relationship with the city of Vienna and its residents.

For his part, Antonio Oboro Ondo, Minister of Minerals and Hydrocarbons of Equatorial Guinea, Chairman of the Conference, said in his opening speech that the “OPEC” International Conference, in its eighth edition, is a prestigious event, in which ministers from both producing and consuming countries, prominent high-level speakers, leaders of tomorrow, and hundreds of Delegates from all over the world, in the presence of elite thought leaders in the global oil and energy industry.

It was a meeting that many believed brought about long-term stability across Europe. And he continued: Just a few weeks ago in Baghdad, we celebrated the long and successful history of OPEC, the importance of oil development for our member countries and the social and economic progress of the world, and the OPEC conference follows up on that success and discusses the main opportunities and challenges facing the oil industry today in addition to the coming decades such as market stability. , energy security, sustainability, investments and financing, technologies for a low-emissions future, fair energy transitions, energy poverty and diversification.

He added that what links these issues, along with the main theme of the conference, “Towards a sustainable and comprehensive transition of energy”, is the need for all kinds of energies, now and in the future, indicating that the reality of energy requires a realistic and logical transition with the participation of all parties, and we hope that it will provide us with This conference is a platform for building bridges to a sustainable energy future.
